This copy of windows must be activated with microsoft?

Hello there I recently recieved a virus and well ive been running xp for 2 years now (same copy) now my computer is saying you must activate windows before using it. i proceed to do it online and it just freezes. what should i do to fix this problem? should i just give up and re install windows? (o yeah it is a liget copy of xp)

I would totally do a factory restore, and start from scratch.

Just remember, back-up all you folders, pictures, & music.
